| Thallus shrubby, erect, 2–4 cm tall; branches terete to slightly swollen and irregular; short fibrils moderately dense, usually c. 1 mm long, few to 2 mm; long fibrils or branchlets dense, 3–6 mm; papillae usually absent, occasionally few, very rarely numerous. Medulla lax, arachnoid; axis 1/3–3/7 width of branch. Apothecia 3–5 (–10) mm diam.; fibrils dense, some forked, long and short in 2 rows on margin; lower surface with long fibrils. CHEMISTRY: Cortex containing usnic acid. Medulla K+ yellow → red: containing salazinic acid (trace), or medulla K–: containing scabrosins. | ||
| This endemic subspecies is rare in S.A., N.S.W. and western Vic.; more common in eastern Vic. and Tas. | ||
